You’ve read the articles on what TO do as a Direct Seller. Let’s talk about what NOT to do. There are 7 things you might be doing as a Direct Seller that could be hindering your growth. I’ve been in direct sales for several years. I’ve learned a lot, made a lot of mistakes, learned what works, and what doesn’t. Let me share a few things that don’t work.
#1. Hey Girl Messages
You have a new message, open it up and read “Hey girl! I just started a new business! I’ve got some great products that made me think of you, here’s the link”. You haven’t spoken to this person in 10 years. I highly doubt she actually thought of you and sent the message. My guess? You and 150 other people are getting the same copied and pasted message. More than likely, you don’t respond and you have an icky feeling about that person now. No one wants to be “hey girl”d! Do yourself a favor, quit sending those messages! Stop spamming and start connecting! Social Media is a great way to grow your business, if you do it the right way! Take time to comment on posts, build genuine connections. Genuine connections leads to genuine support and genuine sales.
#2. Over Posting
I don’t know about you but when I check my email each morning I delete about 10 sales emails. I don’t open them up, just hit delete and move right along. When I open up Facebook, I scroll right past the sales posts. I bet you do the same. We aren’t on Facebook to shop, most of us join to connect. If you are constantly posting your products, you are an ad, a commercial that people scroll right past. You want people to see YOU, connect with you. Be genuine, be yourself. Follow the 80/20 rule. 80% engagement/personal/fun/lifestyle posts and 20% sales. If you are following the 80/20 rule, when you do post that sales post, you’re friends will see, they won’t scroll right past.
#3. Stop Complaining
Who wants to open up their Social Media app and read a bunch of whining? Keepin’ it real here, if I want to listen to whining, I’ll just hang out with my kids. If you had a bad day, its ok to share that, maybe not jump on Social Media and complain about everything. A HUGE no-no; don’t complain about your business! If something changes in your company, you get on Social Media, or tell a friend about how awful something is, why would they want to buy from that company again? You’ve just told them why they shouldn’t shop with you. Be positive on Social Media. Be the light. People will be drawn to your positivity and will connect with you.

#4 Don’t be Secretive
Have you seen that friend/business page/group on Social Media who is trying to get you to buy something but you have no idea what they are selling? You head over to their page, you see multiple posts of mystery products. You search and search the page and find no website and no product name. Why is it a secret? If its so great, tell me! If people have to dig to find out what you are selling, most likely they’ll keep on moving before they figure out what your offering. Be upfront, be honest. Not everyone needs your product, if you aren’t telling them what your product is, you aren’t allowing them to make a decision whether or not they need the product. You look a little shady. Just sayin’. Be proud of the products you have to offer! Share your pride and share your company! Make sure your shopping links are easily accessible so they people you’ve connected with, can click and shop!

#5. Stop Hiding
Stop hiding your gorgeous face! Don’t just post products. This goes back to #2, your post will look like a commercial. Take a selfie with the beautiful jewelry you sell. Take a picture with your new mascara. Show who you are, be the brand! You are your best advertisement. If you are using your own products, sharing the products you are using, and following rules 1-4 the sales will come.
Direct Sales is hard. YOU can succeed, you have to believe you can and stop making the rookie mistakes I listed above. I made a lot of mistakes in this business. Once I learned how to build genuine connections, my business tripled. Yours can too. Be genuine. Be yourself, you’re pretty amazing!
